LEAD BOLDLY: It’s a choice

by Julie Jakopic  - October 30, 2025

It’s been another week for the books. One that has required deciding between options we’d have seen as unthinkable a year ago, none of which we like. Making decisions that have big impact on the lives of others – for good and for not good.

As someone who took her school motto to heart, “to find a way or make one,” it’s been rough. I am not used to not being able to find a way to create win-wins.

And I get a choice. I can look around and only see what’s wrong with me, with work, with the world and be tempted to give up and crawl in bed for the foreseeable future.

Or I can be thankful. Weeks like this make that bed look fabulous. But I know to refocus. Refocus with purpose. That bed? It’s in a temperature controlled, safe home, with electricity and the internet 24/7, and a full refrigerator. I am safer than the vast majority of the world. So at least for today, I’ll say thank you, focus forward, and do what I can today to make things better for me, those I care about, our community, our country. One day at a time.

It’s easy to get down and stay down. But the way to ward off what scares us is to get up and in our own small way, take action.

What can you do today? Not sure? Here is a list I think I’ve shared before with a few, well 80 ideas.

Take care of you. Go forward.
