I don’t know about you, but I’ve watched people work for years toward a dream, finally reach it, and feel… nothing much. Not failure. Not regret. Just a quiet, unsettling “meh.”
I have a client who I knew from grade school that she wanted to lead a mission-driven, high-impact organization. She did everything right: strong grades, the best schools, a respected firm. When that firm was acquired, she rose to Vice President. Then came larger firms, larger teams, larger titles. She was executing the plan she had drawn up decades earlier.
And yet, instead of celebrating, she felt underwhelmed. It wasn’t that she wasn’t proud, or that the jobs weren’t exactly what she had imagined them to be. The problem was that by the time she arrived, she had already moved past them. She had outgrown the roles before she ever held them.
I’ve heard versions of this story more times than I can count. What we don’t always account for is how much we change as we overcome obstacles. The woman who earned those titles was fundamentally different from the girl, or even the younger woman, who first dreamed of them. She hadn’t failed to reach her goal. She had grown beyond it.
For those of us who are driven to lead and then quietly disappointed when we arrive, I think there are two paths worth considering. The first is to pause long enough to notice what brings you joy and where you feel most alive and powerful. The second is to act on what you find: either invest fully in the role you have, or find a different place from which to lead.
The disappointment is just information. Both paths move you toward your best fit for who you are right now. Either way, you’re not lost. You’ve grown.
