I firmly believe change takes both the heat of advocacy and the light of negotiation. Pressure and diplomacy. Some of us are more suited to one role or the other, others are more comfortable in both. Which is a better fit for you? What does the situation call for? Here are some tips for thinking about this.
Tip 1. What is the issue? Is it about educating others about your position? Or is it about demonstrating the need and numbers?
Tip 2. Is the issue one you can speak to calmly and listen to other’s positions? If not, it may be better to turn your passion into building support or opposition to proposals?
Tip 3. Find and support those who have a different approach. Those who bring heat need effective negotiators (the light), and those who bring light, need heat to back them up.
Let me know what you think!
Have a great week,
Julie
