LEAD BOLDLY: What if it was practice?

I’ve been thinking about the state of the world. In some ways what’s happening in our nation is really emblematic of what’s happening around the world and perhaps a reaction to the pandemic; after a time of chaos, the certainty of autocracy appeals to some.

This week I had the chance to speak at a couple of conferences and the nonprofit and government leaders attending. It was great to be on a real stage with real audiences. It made me think a little differently.

What if the pandemic was preparation for now. Anybody in the world who is over five has lived through extraordinary change we learned how to cope with Covid. We learned to work differently, build and serve communities differently, learn differently.

How can we apply those lessons now?

  1. Local community is where connection happens. Neighbors helping neighbors. A great way to meet people and see impact quickly.
  2. What’s the second right answer? The old way may not work or may not work as well. What is the second or third right answer that might? We had to learn to work from home effectively. We had to create online ways to ask for and provide help. What do we need to do differently now?
  3. What role do you play best? We need organizers. We need people at the table. We need people pressuring from outside. What do you enjoy doing? Where do you play best? Play there.
  4. Play. Yes, play. We need to test ideas, not wait for perfection. We need to laugh more and act more and worry less,

Need something easy to do? Make your voice heard. Call the people who represent you – takes just a few minutes. Here’s a reliable source for how to call and what you might say about issues that matter to you.
