What looks important often depends on where you sit. If you are a giraffe and looking across the world, understanding the big picture comes easily but the details on the ground can be fuzzy or invisible. For the ground bound turtle, understanding all the details and subtle changes on the ground are what you see, and what’s on the other side of the trees is something you may not even think about, and if you did, would seem impossible to know.
As leaders, if we are more like giraffes, it’s important to remember that our team members may only see the part of the work they touch every day. For them to see the big picture, we need to show it.
And as a big picture person who can blow past the small things, it’s important to remember how often we are saved by their attention to detail.
