It has been a wild three years for me. Then I agreed to help a federal client build a short but intense effort that is now coming to a close.
As that work comes to a close, I am reminded of a quote from David Foster Wallace, “Everything I have ever let go of has claw marks.” It is something I have often said about myself. No doubt it is part of why I have friends from decades ago, why I rarely lose earrings, and why I remember things.Â
But this ending was planned from the start. While transitions are hard for many of us, with some planning and clear communication, they can be smoother. A few things I have learned that help in leading others through change.
- Be an advocate. For positive change and for your team.Â
- Be transparent. Share what you know. To the extent possible, clearly share expectations.Â
- Be honest. When you don’t know, say so. When you can solve problems, solve them. When you can’t be honest with yourself and your team.
- Be open. Transitions create both challenges and opportunities. Be open to both.
- Be kind. Change can bring on anxiety for team members. It’s important to remember and respond accordingly, giving extra grace and attention where appropriate.Â
And be kind to you. Take the time you need to adjust. Find mentors that can support you.Â
Best,
Julie
