LEAD BOLDLY: Waste Your Time

by Julie Jakopic  - June 19, 2025

Yes, you read that right.

If you are like me, you are overscheduled. You are busy, curious, and sure you can fit one more thing into your day. Where would you find time to waste?

But here’s the deal. The time you spend wasting it – not doom scrolling but doing nothing, or creating art or a new dish, or playing with kids, or running or just daydreaming makes it easier to get things done.

Research shows that those breaks help concentration, attention, and productivity by

  1. Aiding problem-solving
  2. Boosting creativity
  3. Improving learning
  4. Inspiring kindness
  5. Improving your mood

For me, I take paint breaks. I keep watercolors and paper out on a table. Between meetings, I might paint a shape, or a layer of color. Next, break? Next color. In little 5 minute breaks, I get out of my logical brain for a bit and create fun little pieces of art.

How can you build in some “wasted” time into your day?

Reply and let me know.

Best,

Julie
