What If Wednesday – What if… it’s about freedom?

by Julie Jakopic  - July 1, 2020

As we head into the 4th of July holiday, I’ve been thinking about freedom.

And especially freedom during COVID-19.

For some people, it’s about whether or not they wear a mask.

For some, it’s about how and where they work.

For others, it’s about what they believe and the religion they practice. For some people, freedom is about doing whatever they please whenever and where ever they please. For others, it’s the freedom to go out safely knowing others are wearing masks and practicing distancing.

For many, it’s about the freedom to live and work free of judgment based on what they look like, the body they were born into, or who they love.

This week we look back and celebrate the Declaration of Independence this week that set out the ideals of our country

I believe protecting freedom is a collaborative effort. That I fight for your right to be respected and safe to be you. That I wear a mask and physically distance, to protect you, just as I wear a seatbelt. And that you do the same. For the sake of the others in your world. I hope this holiday brings a collective commitment to move towards the ideals in the Declaration of Independence together with deliberate speed, commitment, and creativity.

Be well,

Julie
